Biography & Research Interests
I am a Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at UC Riverside. My research is at the intersection of plasma and materials science and engineering. My group explores how the unique properties of plasmas, which strongly deviate from thermodynamic equilibrium, can be leveraged to realize materials and processes with unprecedented properties. My research group aims to address compelling societal issues, such as energy and sustainability. I am also an entrepreneur and co-founder of 4th State Energies, a startup bringing plasma-produced materials for next-gen batteries to the market.
Research Thrusts
Plasma Processing of Nanomaterials
Non-thermal plasmas provide processing capabilities that are simply inaccessible with standard preparation techniques. My group has deep expertise in leveraging such capabilities to develop materials with novel functionalities.
Next-Generation Energy Storage
The development of improved energy storage technologies is crucial to enable a more sustainable and secure energy infrastructure. We focus on plasma processes for the synthesis of next-generation battery materials because of both their processing capabilities and their inherent scalability.
Fundamentals of Plasma-Material Interaction
Non-thermal plasmas activate heterogeneous chemistry in ways fundamentally distinct from either light or heat. This interaction is at the foundation of the processing capabilities of non-thermal plasmas. My group develops in-operando diagnostics to probe the plasma-material interface with unprecedented detail.
The Mangolini group acknowledges the funding agencies that have graciously supported its efforts throughout the years.
